For her exhibition at Mount Stuart, a Victorian neo-Gothic mansion located on the Isle of Bute, Macintyre has taken the house’s stained-glass zodiac windows and the circular, coloured windows in the ceiling – known as oculi – as her starting point. The windows represent both astrology and nature and use a changing sequence of colours to suggest the seasons.

Macintyre will create a body of works as a response to the unique atmosphere of the spaces they will inhabit, reacting to architectural features of the building as well as developing their own sculptural language. The intention of the artist is to layer multiple connections and meanings through the forms of the works, for example, by using materials that create a physical connection to the house and its environment.

The resulting sculptural works will be installed in groups throughout the house and grounds in sites including the upstairs conservatory and the Marble Hall. Each site will house a group of works relating to a particular season. Central to these works will be their use of plinths, or presentation devices as an essential part of the sculptural composition. The focus on the ephemeral qualities of the house; its light, space and atmosphere will be central to the development of the exhibition.
