From food to fashion, plants to cars, fine art to advertising Alan Michael’s paintings and photo-based artworks treat all his subjects with the same coolness and indifference. Images can be isolated, split or repeated so they appear to float free from any recognisable source or context. With their extraordinary attention to technical detail, flatness and often a mirror-like sheen his paintings recall both art historical movements like Pop art and Photorealism and radical changes in the way we see, understand or collect images since the advent of the internet. For Syn at Tramway, Alan Michael presents a new series of works, which, he says, are “ based on dreams and refer to nothing outside themselves.”
